Jul 19    An Appalachian Evening-Kruger Brothers
Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Jens’ and Uwe’s first public performances were as a duo, and in just a few years they were busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and western Europe. CBS Records contracted with Jens and Uwe when Jens was just seventeen years old, and shortly thereafter, the Krugers hosted a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss Public broadcast group. Several years later, the brothers teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, a native of New York City who also had a very extensive musical upbringing in classical and jazz music (studying with jazz great Milt Hinton), thus forming a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Together, they established the incomparable sound that The Kruger Brothers are known for today. The trio moved to the United States in 2002 and is based in Wilkesboro, NC. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, The Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. The honesty of their writing has since become a hallmark of the trio’s work. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg , (bass and vocals) – The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Their original music is crafted around their discerning taste, and the result is unpretentious, cultivated, and delightfully fresh. Tickets: Adults $30; Students/K-12 $10; plus tax. Their independent release, ‘Colder Side of Love,’ received three reviews in Bluegrass Today acknowledging their talented songwriting, melodic arrangements, and smooth vocal harmonies. They bring an “edgy, modern sound” to bluegrass music and “if they stick to this formula, we will be hearing about Appalachian Smoke for a long time.” – Blue Grass Today Mikel Laws (Alarka banjo/guitar), Jamie Mason (Culberson guitar/banjo), Kenneth Rymer (Crandell resophonic guitar), BJ Taylor (Nantahala mandolin/octave mandolin), and Tim Williams (Robbinsville bass). Aug 23    An Appalachian Evening-Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road
Characterized by No Depression as “the future of bluegrass”, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road twine innovation, tradition, and excellence into a unique musical experience. Though only in his 22nd year, North Carolina’s Liam Purcell has already established a name for himself in the world of American Stringband music. Growing up less than a mile away from the legendary guitarist Doc Watson, Purcell was steeped in Appalachian Old-Time and Bluegrass traditions from an early age. Taking inspiration from the local Deep Gap legacy, Liam began writing, performing, and storytelling from an early age. Entering the professional bluegrass circuit during his teenage years, Purcell formed the stringband-supergroup Cane Mill Road. He would go on to lead the virtuosic ensemble through regional appearances, building a fanbase across the Southeast and bringing his homespun rapport to some of the most revered festivals in the scene. By the time Purcell was 17, the project had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2019 as the recipient of their Momentum Band of the Year Award. Tickets: Adults $25; Students/K-12 $10; plus tax. All concerts are in the fully restored Lynn L. Shields Auditorium. Dinner is available for purchase in the Schoolhouse Cafe beginning at 6 pm. Your tickets will be available at our ‘will call’ desk prior to the event. If you have any problems or questions, please call us during normal business hours at 828-479-3364. Aug 30    An Appalachian Evening-Darren Nicholson Band
If you’re looking to be impressed, you will be – if you’re looking to make a friend, you already have. Darren Nicholson, who has played mountain music since his youth in Western North Carolina, is a high-caliber musician with substantial contributions to such acts as Alecia Nugent and Balsam Range. Yes, he’s a punchy mandolinist with instrumentation nods to Bill Monroe and Marty Stuart, but he’s also an introspective songwriter, technical harmony singer, convincing lead vocalist, and a man on a mission. Since going solo, Nicholson has persistently and earnestly invested in his shows, making each one a tailored experience. They are genuine, entertaining, and an extended handshake to the community. He’s accomplished this all while managing to retain the fun-witted and approachable character formed in his raising. Tickets: Adults $30; Students/K-12 $10; plus tax. Jan 1    New Year Healing and Renewal Service
Join us on New Year’s Day at noon for our annual renewal meditation service! This annual celebration features an inspirational lecture, a chakra alignment meditation and a release-and-renew ceremony focusing on letting go of the past and welcoming a brighter, better future. No matter what’s going on in your life, there is always room for improvement. Let go of the “rules” that hold you back, and create a new freedom to create whatever it is you desire in your life. Thanks for making it such a wonderful year at The Meditation Center!
